The former Exeter man is one of the most in-demand forwards in the country following an outstanding campaign that saw him net 25 Championship goals last season.

Watkins is understood to be a primary transfer target for manager Dean Smith – who worked with the 24-year-old at Brentford.

And reports have suggested Villa are now preparing to make their opening offer to land the prolific hitman – who they feel will address their shortage of goals.

As well as Villa, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United are said to be among Watkins’ admirers.

But the forward is said to be keen on a reunion with Smith and a move to Villa Park.

As well as being interested in Watkins, it is understood Smith also wants to raid his former employers for winger Said Benrahma. But he too is likely to cost in the region of £25million.
