Aston Villa close in Pepe Reina deal

Villa are poised to make their second signing of the January transfer window after agreeing a deal with AC Milan keeper Pepe Reina.

The former Spain and Liverpool shot-stopper is due in the Midlands early next week for a medical after terms on a loan deal until the end of the season were finalised with the Italian club on Friday night.

Villa were in the market for keeper following the end-of-season injury to Tom Heaton, while Jed Steer is sidelined with an Achilles problem.

Orjan Nyland will start Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City and for the moment will retain the No.1 jersey.

But the club believe 37-year-old Reina will bring added competition and experience to the dressing room as Villa battle to stay in the top flight.
