Aston Villa's Orjan Nyland is looking to impress again

Orjan Nyland is targeting another big performance against Manchester City on Sunday as he looks to continue making the case for remaining Villa’s No.1.

The Norway international, who has taken over between the sticks following Tom Heaton’s season-ending knee injury, earned plaudits for an impressive display in Wednesday’s 1-1 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg draw at Leicester.

Villa, who are also without Jed Steer, are still considering whether to bring in another keeper during the January window.

But for now Nyland has the shirt and is determined to do everything he can to keep it. “When you’ve got two keepers injured, it’s always going to be a talking point,” he said.

“The only thing I can do is be in charge of my performance and do the best I can and then whatever happens, happens. So I’ve just got to keep delivering good performances. That’s all I can do.”

The 29-year-old was in excellent form at the King Power Stadium, twice denying both Jamie Vardy and James Maddison, as Villa claimed a result which left the tie nicely balanced ahead of the second leg on January 28.

Before then, Smith’s men face several important Premier League fixtures, starting with the visit of champions City.

“We know we have to take points in the Premier League – that’s our focus now and we will take it game by game,” said Nyland.
