Aston Villa to learn more about Jed Steer injury
Villa were today hoping to learn more on the extent of the injury suffered by goalkeeper Jed Steer in the opening minutes of yesterday’s derby defeat at Wolves.
Steer, making his first start of the season after Tom Heaton was forced out with a calf problem, lasted just eight minutes at Molineux before suffering an apparent Achilles injury.
The 27-year-old, who was helped off the pitch by Villa’s medical staff, was due to undergo a scan last night to determine the extent of the problem.
Steer’s injury saw Orjan Nyland, the club’s third-choice keeper, make his first appearance since December of last year.
Villa, who were also missing Jack Grealish and Bjorn Engels, then lost Matt Targett late on in a nightmare first half, after the full-back suffered a blow to the head and experienced double vision.
Heaton’s injury, which had first flared up during the previous weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, has forced his withdrawal from the England squad.
Smith, however, is hopeful he, Grealish, Engels and Targett will be fit when Villa return to Premier League action against Newcastle a fortnight today.
Villa’s squad are due to return to training on Wednesday.
