Dean Smith’s men head to Arsenal on Sunday sitting 17th in the Premier League table having won just one of their opening five matches.

Villa splashed out £127million on 12 new signings after winning promotion and McGinn, an ever-present so far, knows there are others champing at the bit to get into the starting XI.

“There is a lot of competition for places so if we don’t step up in the next few weeks and get the wins I am sure the manager will change it,” said the Scot.

Villa will be backed by a travelling army of 3,000 supporters at the Emirates and the buzz which followed promotion remains intact, with next weekend’s home match against Burnley already sold out.

But McGinn admits the team must start repaying fans with the results, adding: “It’s going to be a tough journey and there are no easy games in this league.

“The supporters are right behind us and it is a great place to be at the moment but we need to start giving them the wins they are craving.”
