Goalkeeper Jed Steer has been rewarded for his part in Villa’s promotion by agreeing a new four-year contract extension at the club.

The 26-year-old has penned a deal which will keep him at Villa Park until 2023.

It continues a remarkable year for Steer, who returned from the wilderness to play a major role in Villa regaining their Premier League status.

Steer, who had made just nine first-team appearances in five years at the club prior to last season, was only recalled from a season-long loan spell at Charlton in January following an injury to Orjan Nyland.

But after then taking the No.1 shirt in February, he never relinquished it, playing every match in Villa’s club record-breaking 10-game winning streak which reignited the campaign.

Steer then saved two penalties in the play-off semi-final shootout win over Albion, with Villa then going on to beat Derby at Wembley and seal their top flight return.

“To commit my future for another few years is something I have always wanted to do. I’m delighted it has happened,” he said.

“Last season was brilliant. The last few months leading up to the play-off final was fantastic.

“To get promoted and sign a new deal is something I wanted to do.”

Steer had agreed a one-year extension, through to 2020, after returning to Villa from Charlton.

But his subsequent performances meant the club were always keen to tie him down for the longer term, with the extension also protecting his value.

Villa may still look to add another keeper this summer, with Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge among their targets.
