Aston Villa in EFL Trophy as West Brom miss out

By Joe Edwards | Aston Villa | Published:

Villa have replaced Albion in having an under-21s side in the EFL Trophy.

Portsmouth are the current holders, having beat Sunderland at Wembley in the final

Villa are one of four new teams taking part next season, alongside Liverpool, Manchester United and Norwich. Middlesbrough, Stoke, Swansea and the Baggies are dropping out.

Invited teams are selected based on the club’s final league position at the end of the 2018/19 season, with the first 16 with Category One Academy status invited.

Wolves will have an u21s team in the Trophy – won by Portsmouth last campaign – for the second term in a row.
