Boss Dean Smith is eager to strengthen in the middle of the park before tomorrow’s deadline and is considering a loan bid for the England international.

Chalobah, 24, is currently out of favour at Vicarage Road has not been named in the Premier League squad by the Hornets for more than a month.

Smith is also keen on Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden, though a deal would depend on the Magpies signing a replacement first.

Albion are another club interested in the 24-year-old, should he become available in the closing hours of the window.

Villa were last night edging closer to agreeing a deal for Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings.

The Cherries are thought to want a sizeable loan fee, while Villa would pay the bulk of the 25-year-old’s wages.

Burnley centre-back Ben Gibson is also on the radar, though an ambitious approach looks unlikely to succeed.

Villa, who want Gibson on loan with a view to a permanent move, are thought to have been rebuffed after making an initial enquiry earlier in the month.

The Clarets have no interest in parting ways they signed in a joint club record £15million deal from Burnley only last summer.

Young playmaker Callum O’Hare yesterday completed a loan switch to League Two Carlisle United until the end of the season.

Out-of-favour striker Scott Hogan is on course to join Sheffield United on loan before tomorrow’s 11pm deadline.
