Dean Smith believes there is still a lot more to come from Villa after claiming his team ‘drew a line in the sand’ by beating Derby.

Saturday’s 3-0 win at Pride Park was comfortably Villa’s finest performance of the campaign and came in Smith’s fifth game in charge since replacing Steve Bruce.

Despite being pleased with the performance, Smith believes there remains plenty of room for improvement.

“I could see it in their eyes on Saturday, there was a lot of belief there,” he said. “There are still things we need to get better at – defending long balls down the middle for one, where they created a couple of chances in the first-half.

“But when we have a gameplan and the players follow it, we look one hell of a team.”

He added: “There is a lot more to come from this squad.

“I said to them Saturday was an opportunity to draw a line in the sand, to show where we are at.

“It shows the quality we have in the squad and we perform like a team, as we did on Saturday, we can get performances and results.”
