Aston Villa blog: Time up for Bruce whatever happens this week

What more is there to write about with Steve Bruce and his now almost embarrassing reluctance to set a team up to go and win a game of football?

Even with his back against the wall under extreme pressure, he still decided to put two fingers up to the fans and pick a negative team full of players playing in unnatural positions against Bristol City on Friday.

You would think at the very least we would start on the front foot trying to get forward and attack, but for most of the first half we just did what we always do and defended while staying in formation and tried not to concede – then we conceded!

It was an odd goal and, no matter how many times I’ve watched it, I can’t decide if the keeper should have done better.

Yet again though, the scorer wasn’t closed down quickly enough and I have to point the finger at Mile Jedinak as he was the closest defender.

With the last kick of the half, we managed to pull level with a good set piece and fine header from the almost forgotten Birkir Bjarnson.

The second half started as I’d hoped the first half should have, with a real desire to get forward and dominate. But, as usual, we soon ran out of ideas and steam so the game fizzled out to the inevitable draw. And once again the post-match interview was laughable with the spin in full force from Bruce, stating we have only lost two in 10 – what he failed to say is we have only won one in eight!

With the bottom two teams to play next week, we have a chance to close the gap on the pacemakers.

But even six points next week shouldn’t stop his removal from the job as he just won’t get us where we need to be – we need a fresh outlook and start, and I’m praying the owners agree.
