The 23-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a deal which has more than a doubled his £20,000-a-week salary and made him one of the top earners at the club.

New chief executive Christian Purslow and executive chairman Nassef Sawiris met with Grealish’s representatives in recent weeks to thrash out an agreement.

Purslow said: “Securing the long-term future of Jack, a player we believe will play a pivotal role in leading Aston Villa back to where it belongs, is fantastic news for everybody associated with our club.

“He is a tremendous talent who has been with us since he was a child and naturally we are delighted that he has now committed the next five years of his career to Aston Villa.”

Signing a new deal completes a remarkable turnaround for Grealish, who looked destined to leave Villa for much of the summer before the arrival of Sawiris and co-owner Wes Edens ended the club’s financial crisis.

Sawiris refused to sell Grealish despite strong interest from Tottenham, fearing he risked giving away the club’s “heart and soul”.

The new deal will now lift the mood at a time when boss Steve Bruce is under increasing pressure, following a run of one win in seven games.
