Garry Thompson: Attack best for Aston Villa loanee Tammy Abraham

Garry Thompson reckons Villa must go on the offensive if they are to get the best out of hotshot Tammy Abraham.

The on-loan Chelsea striker was yesterday on target for England Under-21s and could make his Villa bow at Blackburn on Saturday.

Former Holte End hero Thompson reckons Abraham, who scored 26 goals in all competitions when last in the Championship with Bristol City, has the potential to be a major hit at Villa Park.

But he believes it will require a more attacking approach from Steve Bruce’s team if his talents are to be fully utilised.

Thompson said: “There is no question he is a player with goals in him, he proved that at Bristol City.

“With the right service I think he will thrive. The question is whether Villa can give him that service.

“With the players they have in the team now, it really shouldn’t be an issue.

“You’ve got Jack Grealish along with the likes of John McGinn, Anwar El Ghazi and Yannick Bolasie who can all provide decent delivery.

“But it might require them going on the front foot a bit more as a team.”

Abraham netted as England Under-21s secured a 2-1 win over Latvia in a European Championship qualifier.

The future of former Villa skipper John Terry is, meanwhile, potentially back in the balance.

Reports have claimed the 37-year-old, who was linked with a return to Villa, may pull out of signing for Spartak Moscow despite undergoing a medical and agreeing terms.
