A tumultuous summer which saw them come within a whisker of administration means Villa will be forced to do the bulk of their business late.

This week’s capture of goalkeeper Andre Moreira on a season-long loan deal from Atletico Madrid was their first signing of the window and Bruce is eager to add more as he again aims to mount a promotion push.

Enquiries have been made over loan moves for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and West Ham’s Jordan Hugill, while Villa would also like to bring back winger Robert Snodgrass.

A number of European targets are thought to have been scouted, while the club’s new owners have enlisted super agent Jorge Mendes to help with recruitment.

Though the window for permanent deals closes next Thursday, Villa have the advantage of being able to sign loan players up until the end of August.

“We’re six players short than we were at the end of last season so we’ll endeavour to be active,” Bruce said.

The manager is also hopeful of keeping Jack Grealish.

Reports in London yesterday claimed Tottenham are still confident of signing the 22-year-old, yet they now have only days left to complete a deal with Villa prepared to play hard ball in negotiations.
