Boss Steve Bruce is hopeful of completing a deal for the 27-year-old, who currently plays for German Second Division outfit FC Ingolstadt.
Nyland, who was linked with Villa’s city rivals Blues earlier in the summer, would become the club’s second keeper signing in a matter of days following the loan capture of Andre Moreira from Atletico Madrid.
Villa, who saw a deal for last season’s No.1 Sam Johnstone go begging when they failed to win promotion, already had Jed Steer and Mark Bunn on the books.
But both have struggled with injury in recent years and speaking about Moreira’s signing on Friday, Bruce said: “It was an area we needed to address.
“Jed and Mark have picked up some big injuries over the last few years. In that department, with the loss of Sam Johnstone, he's a big addition to us.”
Nyland, who stands 6ft 4ins tall, previously played under former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solksjaer at Molde before joining Ingolstadt in 2015.
