Experience pays off for Aston Villa's fearless Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton has developed a fearlessness through his career that has paid dividends for Villa this season, says assistant boss Colin Calderwood.

Hutton has been one of Villa’s most consistent performers since switching to left-back and looks set to play a vital role in their play-off double-header with Middlesbrough.

The 33-year-old could yet earn a new contract at Villa Park – but only if the claret and blues achieve the financial boost of promotion into the Premier League

Calderwood said of Hutton: “His experience, his athleticism and his knowledge of the game have been very, very helpful.

“He is very comfortable and happy with what he has achieved and done in the game.

“As you get older, you probably feel more comfortable with the situation and the environment you play in. That does not ease off pressure or the intensity in the game.

“But in Alan’s case, I think he is comfortable with who he is and what he can bring to any game.”
