The young Villa playmaker has been in superb form since returning from months out with following a kidney operation after an accidental clash with former team-mate Tom Cleverley last summer. And Grealish revealed he now feels a more confident and consistent player.

The 22-year-old told the club’s website: “Since I’ve come back from injury, I’ve not been a different player, but done stuff differently, more consistent. Last year I’d have a good game then it would be a while then until I had another good one.

"This year I feel a lot more confident in myself.”

He added: “When I was out injured, I was thinking, ‘you know what, I haven’t got this any more’. It was such a big injury with my kidney.

"The doctor was telling me just before I had the operation just how big it is and how life-threatening it is.”
