John Terry open to staying at Aston Villa

John Terry has indicated he would be willing to stay at Villa next season – though the deal may rest on the club winning promotion.

The former England skipper joined the Championship club on a one-year deal last summer following his departure from Chelsea, where he won the Premier League five times.

Despite having turned 37 in December, Terry has adapted well to the demands of the second tier and is understood to have informed boss Steve Bruce he is ready to play on for another year.

Villa, for their part, are keen to keep a player who has been instrumental in changing the dressing room culture but acknowledge regaining Premier League status may be required to make the deal financially viable.

Bruce has been forced to work under Financial Fair Play restraints for the past two transfer windows and though keeping Terry is not seen as impossible should Villa remain in the Championship, promotion would make negotiations far less complex.

The manager has previously expressed a willingness to offer Terry a place on his coaching staff and a deal which would see the centre-back take up a player-coach role is a possibility.

Villa, who currently sit fourth in the Championship table with eight games remaining, resume their campaign away at Hull next Saturday.
