The 22-year-old has not featured since last month’s 2-0 Second City derby win over Blues due to a calf injury, but was back in light training at the end of last week.

Boss Steve Bruce was yet to rule Grealish out of the meeting with the Black Cats, who currently sit bottom of the table.

Grealish’s return will be a huge boost to Villa’s chances of seizing automatic promotion, with Bruce recently claiming the academy product was playing better than anyone else in the Championship prior to his injury.

Top scorer Albert Adomah is fit again following a hamstring injury, though Alan Hutton is set to miss out.

Villa’s squad were due to head north today having spent the weekend training following the postponement of Saturday’s clash with QPR, the first time the club have lost a home fixture due to weather since December 2000.

Club officials had been confident the game would go ahead before heavier than expected snowfall on Friday night left them with no option but to call it off in the interest of public safety.

The match was quickly rearranged for a week Tuesday, March 13 (7.45pm). Tickets for the original date will still be valid, or supporters can receive a refund, excluding the booking fee.
