Sheffield Wednesday 2 Aston Villa 4 - player ratings

Villa came from behind to claim a dramatic 4-2 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Published

Steve Bruce's team twice trailed at Hillsborough but picked up a vital three points thanks to goals from Lewis Grabban, Glenn Whelan, Conor Hourihane and Robert Snodgrass.

Here we rate the players after another afternoon to remember in Sheffield.

Sam Johnstone

Endured a difficult week after mistakes against Fulham and Preston but more than played his part in this win with several fine saves, including one in a goalmouth scramble from Joao. 7/10.

Ahmed Elmohamady

Struggled much like the rest of Villa’s defence in the first-half and was given tough time by Boyd. Better after the break, making a nuisance of himself in the final third. 6/10.

James Chester

Unusually out-of-sorts at times in the opening half, misplacing several passes. Much more commanding in the second half as Villa tightened up at the back. 6/10.

John Terry

This hasn’t been the skipper’s best week of the season but he got through this, much like the team, thanks to sheer hard-work and determination. 6/10.

Alan Hutton

Given a testing time by the lively Lucas Joao before going off injured, though he received little in the way of support. 5/10.

Glenn Whelan

Barring one first-half slip, a strong return to first-team action and saw the Republic of Ireland international net for the first time since November 2011. 7/10.

Conor Hourihane

Struggled to adapt to the physical nature of the game in the first-half but was better after the break. Scored another goal to remember. 6/10.

Josh Onomah

The Tottenham loanee is struggling for form and playing in a position on the left-wing to which he is not suited. Looks like he could do with a break. 5/10.

Lewis Grabban

A lively full debut from the on loan Bournemouth striker, who netted for the second consecutive game and was a general nuisance throughout. 7/10.

Scott Hogan

Denied at point-blank range by Joe Wildsmith. Showed no shortage of effort but found chances at a premium. 6/10.

STAR MAN

Robert Snodgrass

The Scot seems to enjoy playing in Sheffield. Less than a month after his dramatic last-minute winner at Bramall Lane, Snodgrass scored one and made one as Villa escaped Hillsborough with another memorable win. 8/10.
