Derby hero Albert Adomah sets sights on Wolves after Aston Villa climb into top two

Derby day hero Albert Adomah helped Villa beat Blues and climb to second in the Championship before roaring: “Now let’s try and catch Wolves”.

Adomah and Conor Hourihane both netted in the second-half as Villa beat their rivals 2-0 in yesterday’s Second City derby.

Victory saw Steve Bruce’s team climb into the Championship’s automatic promotion places for the first time since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2016.

They remain 12 points behind runaway leaders Wolves but having chased down and overtaken Derby County in recent weeks, Adomah believes Nuno Espirito Santo’s men should be their next target.

“We have to try and chase Wolves and put pressure on them,” he said. “We did it with Derby – though I know we are only one point ahead of them.

“We are still quite a distance from Wolves but anything is possible. Our aim is to catch them. If we keep that aim then we are more likely to stay in the automatic promotion spots.

“If you chase the team above you are more likely to win more games. We don’t want to look below. We have to keep looking above. Automatic promotion is our aim.”

Adomah revealed he had almost been forced off the pitch in the first-half after picking up a tight hamstring.

He stayed on to break the deadlock on the hour mark, before Hourihane’s stunning long-range effort extended Villa’s winning run to seven league matches.

But asked if yesterday’s goal was the most memorable of his career, Adomah replied: “The best goal of my career was for Harrow Borough against AFC Wimbledon, honest!

“No one can take that away from me. I know I scored against Blues at the Holte End but my best ever goal was for Harrow in semi-professional football.

“It was the winning goal in a 2-1 win. I also set up Jamie Lawrence to score as well! I will say this one is the second best because it was against Blues in front of the Holte End.

“That’s one for the history books and it’s one for me to hopefully tell my grandchildren about one day. It was a great second goal from Conor too.”
