The 23-year-old joined the French club on loan in August and has made six appearances so far, even earning a debut call up to the senior France squad last week.

Villa paid £7.7m when they signed Amavi from Nice in 2015.

He made 48 appearances in total for Villa, sticking with the club after relegation from the top flight in 2015/16.

Amavi is said to have made an impressive start to life with Marseille after initially joining on a season-long loan deal.

With former Manchester United left back Patrice Evra struggling with injury he has grabbed his chance at left back and has now signed a permanent contract until 2021.

Meanwhile Villa have been linked with Cologne striker Jhon Cordoba.

The 24-year-old Colombian only joined the Bundesliga side from Mainz in the summer and has scored twice in 10 appearances so far.

He netted from 45 yards in Cologne's Europa League defeat to Arsenal last month.

Steve Bruce has Jonathan Kodjia, Gabby Agbonlahor, Scott Hogan and youngster Keinan Davis as his main forward options and Ross McCormack is on loan with Melbourne City.
