The 26-year-old centre-back yesterday ended a 13-year association with Villa when he moved to Championship rivals Bristol City.

Baker became the third player to make a permanent exit from Villa Park this summer but his departure is by far the most surprising.

The academy product made 34 appearances for the club last season, becoming established as a first-team regular.

But the high-profile arrival of John Terry and Villa’s decision to hand veteran Chris Samba a deal has seen him slide down the pecking order.

The offer of regular first-team football at the Robins, with whom he previously spent the 2015-16 campaign on loan, ultimately proved too tempting to ignore, while Villa were not willing to stand in his way.

Baker posted a message on Twitter which read:

Derby boss Gary Rowett has, meanwhile, ruled out a move for Villa misfit Ross McCormack.

The Rams were among several clubs linked with a move for the striker earlier this week but Rowett said: “Ross is not one on our list at the moment.”
