The Spanish club had been favourites to land the 23-year-old left-back despite having an initial £5.3million offer rejected last month.

And on Friday evening it was announced the clubs have now agreed a fee thought to be worth up to £8million, dependent on add-ons.

Amavi will leave Villa’s training camp in Portugal and head to Spain for a medical before the move is officially completed.

Signed by Tim Sherwood two years ago for a fee of £10million from Nice, the France under-21 international has endured a testing two years in English football.

Amavi suffered a serious knee injury in November 2015 which saw him ruled out of the rest of the campaign which ended with Villa relegated from the Premier League.

Though he recovered to make 36 appearances in all competitions last term, Amavi found his opportunities at left-back limited during the second half of the campaign, with boss Steve Bruce preferring Wales international Neil Taylor.
