The 24-year-old has made no secret of his desire to quit the Midlands and return to his native Spain this summer after failing to settle since a £3.2million switch from Valencia in January 2015.

Gil spent last season on loan at Deportivo and the La Liga club, managed by former Albion boss Pepe Mel, are now expected to pursue a permanent deal.

Reports in Spain also claim Real Betis are interested in the former under-21 international, who is among up to 10 players who could depart Villa Park this summer.

Jordan Amavi is another likely to leave, with the left-back confirming over the weekend he has been transfer listed by the club. Villa are, meanwhile, hoping for progress in their pursuits of John Terry and Sam Johnstone later this week.
