Speculation the former England captain could be headed to Villa Park this summer has intensified after he was pictured playing golf with Steve Bruce in Portugal over the weekend.

Villa chief executive Keith Wyness last month admitted the club had considered making an offer to Terry, though he acknowledged they would be outsiders in the race for the 36-year-old free agent, who is leaving Chelsea after more than 20 years at Stamford Bridge.

Bournemouth are thought to have offered Terry a deal worth £100,000-per-week, while Swansea and Albion have also been linked.

Bruce is in the market for a centre-back this summer, with question marks over the future of both Tommy Elphick and Micah Richards.

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has meanwhile admitted they will not stand in the way of Glenn Whelan, should the midfielder wish to leave the Potters this summer.

The 33-year-old is high on Bruce’s list of transfer targets and Villa are expected to return with an improved offer, after seeing an initial £500,000 bid rejected.
