The former Real Madrid star was pictured alongside the outspoken owner holding an claret and blue shirt, with Xia hinting at bringing him to Villa Park.

"Roberto @Oficial_RC3 told his story just missed to come to @AVFCOfficial in 97/98. Now this is the first sign this summer!" tweeted Xia.

The 44-year-old free-kick taking Galactico actually held talks at Villa regarding a transfer prior to the 1995/96 season, after Brazil took on Sweden at B6 in the Umbro Cup.

However, a deal never materialised for the left-back who went on to have a glittering career playing at clubs including Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Fenerbahce.

Carlos was named by Pele in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players in 2004, and is widely recognised as one of the best left-backs to ever play the game.

His free-kick for Brazil against France in the Tornoi de France is still one of the most memorable goals in football history - just imagine, he could've been doing that in front of the Holte End.
