Price of football: Aston Villa fans paying high price for Championship football

Villa supporters have gone from paying among the lowest prices for season tickets in the Premier League to some of the more expensive in the Championship.

The club reduced the cost of tickets across the board following last season's relegation and their cheapest and dearest priced season tickets are around the average of those offered in the second tier.

At £325, Villa's lowest-priced season ticket is only £2 dearer than the average cheapest season ticket in the division. Ten clubs meanwhile sell more expensive season tickets than Villa's top priced offering of £595.

But those statistics are countered by the fact Villa sell considerably more tickets at the higher bracket. Their most popular season ticket price of £535, exceeds the Championship average in that category by more than £170 and is matched only by Brighton and QPR.

For those supporters buying individual match tickets, Villa Park remains decent value. The cheapest matchday ticket costs £20 - a reduction of £3 on last season's prices which brings it below the Championship average. Villa also compare favourably with many of their rivals in the most expensive matchday ticket category, where their £37 offering only marginally exceeds the division average.

The club also offer a number of deals in order to entice supporters with a family ticket to last month's home game with Fulham costing £40.

For those supporters in need of refreshment, meanwhile, the price of a cup of tea remains frozen at £2.10, though the cost of a pie has increased by 20p, to £3.50.
