The 36-year-old's surprise announcement comes more than four years after he was forced to quit the sport, after being diagnosed with acute leukaemia in March 2012.

Petrov has been training with the club's under-21s for the past few months and has revealed he plans to return to professional football next season, preferably with Villa.

"I am announcing my return to football," said Petrov.

"I have looked after myself quite good and I think I have a big shot.

"Villa's new manager will come in and I will run this through him.

"But I plan to train in pre-season and take it from there.

"I have spoken to a couple of managers but have always said Villa will be my first option."
