Paul Lambert: Villa are building in character
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert believes his side would have lost today's goalless draw against Newcastle United last season.
The claret and blues and the Magpies huffed and puffed but couldn't find a way through at Villa Park, having to settle for a point from their second fixture.
It built on their hard-fought opening day victory at Stoke, where Andreas Weimann netted the only goal of the game, and Lambert reckons Villa are building up a steely resilience.
He said: "I thought first-half we were excellent. We had some great chances. I thought we shaded the first-half. Newcastle had a chance towards the end.
"That's a game last year we would have lost. Two clean sheets from two games, four points from two games is a terrific start from us."
"We have certainly taken the challenge on this season. I thought we were excellent here, all we needed was a finishing touch.
"Newcastle came down here last season and did a job on us. I don't think anyone could begrudge us getting something out of that game.
"We had chances and I couldn't ask for any more effort.'
