Wycombe led 2-1 at the break after goals from Marvin McCoy and Leon Johnson, either side of Matthew Lowton's equaliser.

But Ashley Westwood's strike after the break ensured Villa were not beaten, with manager Paul Lambert back at the club where he started his English managerial career.

There were just 10 minutes on the clock when Wycombe took the lead against their Premier League visitors in fortitious fashion through McCoy.

In space on the right wing, McCoy looked up and floated a ball into the box that struck Ciaran Clark for a deflection that completely bamboozled goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Realising it was sailing into his far corner, Guzan scrambled across to the ball but was flat-footed in his hesistation, the ball going over his head and into the net.

Villa were stunned, particuarly as Andreas Weimann's had pulled a shot wide just moments before the deadlock broken, but regrouped and equalised in the 25th minute.

Summer signing Leandro Bacuna's free-kick into a crowded box from the left was met by the searing leap of Matthew Lowton, who headed the ball low past a motionless Matt Ingram.

Lowton's goal provided double cheer for the Villa full-back, who became the sixth player to sign a new contract with the club yesterday.

But parity didn't last long in this game as Wycombe re-took the lead six minutes later with a second goal on 31.

Matthew Spring's corner from the left was nodded on by Jon-Paul Pittman into the path of Leon Johnson, who couldn't miss as he bundled home from point-blank range.

Villa were once again on level terms six minutes into the second-half, Ashley Westwood taking advantage of poor positioning from Ingram and his defensive wall.

Westwood thought fast to place his low free-kick from 20 years out on the right, squeezing inside the goalkeeper's near post.

As promised before the game, Villa's changed almost their entire team on the hour with the expection of Graham Burke.

Burke had himself replaced Weimann in the first-half, left nursing his ribs after tumbling over Charles Dunne outside the box.

They finished with 10 men after Jordan Bowery left the field nursing his ribs. Jack Grelaish was the pick of the young players for Villa during his power hour.
