Aston Villa defender James Collins today spoke of his desire to open negotiations on a new contract and is convinced the fans have yet to see the best of him.

The centre-back, who joined Villa from West Ham for £5million in September 2009, has just under two years left on his current deal which expires in the summer of 2013 and is ready to begin talks on a fresh deal.

Villa manager Alex McLeish indicated recently that players should concentrate on matters on the pitch rather than worry about new contracts, but has earmarked the 28-year-old defender in his long-term plans.

And Collins said: "I'd love to extend my contract here and stay at Villa as long as I can. I've only just turned 28 so I think my best years are definitely still in front of me.

"My family have settled in the area, so if the opportunity was to come I'd love to sign another contract."
