Aston Villa were today pondering a surprise late bid for Blackpool striker DJ Campbell as boss Alex McLeish aims to boost his attack before the season starts.

The 29-year-old has a release clause for £1.25million which has already been met by Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers, but Villa may try and hijack the deal.

Campbell, an ex-Villa trainee who was released in 2000 after he was not offered a professional contract, is thought to be flattered by the interest and, although moving to London is his preference, he would consider the move.

McLeish has been told by the board he must sell before he can buy but, with Campbell available on the cheap, it is thought a deal could be sanctioned.
