Anderson has won through the group stage at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton in each year since the Grand Slam was introduced in 2007, and topped Group D thanks to a comprehensive 5-1 win against already-eliminated Steve Hine. “I’m happy with that win, it’s a good record to have got through every group stage and things are going okay so far,” said Anderson.

“This is a tournament I love – it’s probably my favourite – so it would be fantastic to win this but there’s a long way to go yet.”

Later in the evening, world number one Michael Van Gerwen sealed his place in the next round with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Joe Murnan.
