Black Country darts star Jamie Hughes’ Grand Slam hopes took a battering with a 5-0 whitewash against Irish youngster Steve Lennon as he followed up his opening loss to Raymond van Barneveld with a second defeat of the weekend.

“I’ve been practising well but it’s not been working on stage,” said Tipton thrower Hughes, who now meets Gerwyn Price in his final group game tomorrow. “I tried my best but it just isn’t happening for me.

“I didn’t settle until the third or fourth leg and it was too late by then. A lot of darts weren’t badly thrown but they just landed on the wrong side of a wire.

“I’ve not felt comfortable on stage yet and I’ll be more focused on Tuesday; I’ll try a different approach on Tuesday against Gerwyn Price and see how that works. I’ll still be trying to finish as well as I can.”
