Matthew Davison wraps match up for Staffs on debut

It took Staffordshire just over 30 minutes on day three of their Unicorns Championship match to complete a huge 372-run victory over Bedfordshire.

Debutant Matthew Davison was the star of the day, taking four wickets for just one run from his 12 balls to finish the innings with figures of 6-10.

The Warwickshire academy product had taken two wickets in the first innings to leave Luton Town & Indians Cricket Club with match figures of 8-41.

Bedfordshire resumed day three on 63-5, chasing a whopping 450 to win, before Davison rattled through their lower order with plenty of pace, setting himself up for a hat-trick in the process.

That didn’t come, and neither did the final wicket of the day, which instead fell to Tim Maxfield.

It was rather apt that the Brewood all-rounder should have the final say after taking 10 wickets on day two.

His match figures of 11-80 were his best for the county and meant Bedfordshire was bowled out for a paltry 77 in their second innings after making just 118 in their first.

But Davison’s performance with the ball has given Staffordshire a selection headache going into the final match of the season.

Second-placed Staffs host league-leaders Norfolk at Longton on Sunday, September 1, in a straight shoot-out for the Eastern Division title.
