Wolverhampton Girls School bowled over by World Cup

Pupils at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School received a coaching masterclass from a cast of women cricketers as they revved up for this summer’s World Cup.

The school, once attended by England cricket legend Rachael Heyhoe Flint and current international star Georgia Elwiss, was chosen as a stop on the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour.

Part of a scheme to take the game to one million children before the World Cup begins on May 30, the tour is also designed to help promote the women’s game.

Girls from four local primary schools were given a grounding on the basics of the game from a coaching team which included former England all-rounder Laura MacLeod.

“We’re taking them through the basics of cricket – batting, catching and playing a game,” said MacLeod. “Predominantly it’s a female-only coaching staff – there’s only one male.

“The school that we’re at has the history, with Rachael Heyhoe Flint and Georgia Elwiss having gone there.

“It comes back to the fact that cricket is somewhat complicated.

“I think it’s always good having personal experience of playing and then once they get to spectate they understand a bit more about it.”
