Danny Ball secures WBC title triumph
Danny Ball upset the odds to be crowned WBC Silver International Welterweight Champion on Saturday evening.
The 23 year-old Dudley boxer travelled to Mason Cartwright’s backyard in Ellesmere Port and put on a career-best performance to blow his opponent away inside three rounds.
“I’m over the moon,” said the BCB-managed and Richie Ghent-trained fighter. “To get the stoppage away from home; it’s a big thing.
“Mason was tough. He could dig a bit too so I had to be wary of him but I was able to catch him with the shots we had worked on. I could see they were hurting him.
“I saw the cut so worked that with the jab and then hurt him with hooks to the head. I caught up and saw him wobble so I just went in to finish the job.
“It’s a massive win for me and takes me to the next level. I’m only 23 and have only been a pro for two years. There’s plenty more to come from me.”
Kyle Williams suffered split-decision heartache in his bid to win the WBO European bantamweight title in his home city of Wolverhampton.
The former Midlands and English champion lost a close contest to Romania’s Ionuta Baluta – who failed to make the weight and so did not collect the belt either.
