Sam Eggington to step up a weight

Stourbridge boxer Sam Eggington has stated his intention to move up a weight division after losing his European welterweight title.

Eggington was beaten by Mohamed Mimoune on a split points decision in Manchester on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old had no qualms with the decision and took to Twitter yesterday to confirm his plan to switch to light middleweight.

“So last night wasn’t my night but we will go back to work pretty soon,” he said.

“I think the move to light middleweight is the right thing to do after last night and how I felt going into the ring. Big thanks to everyone for the support.”

Eggington had won the title in May when stopping Spain’s Ceferino Rodriguez, two months after beating former world champion Paulie Malignaggi.
