Sam Eggington impresses on Prizefighter run

Stourbridge's Sam Eggington could land himself a promotional contract with Matchroom Boxing after his Prizefighter exploits on Saturday night.

The Midlands welterweight champion was nudged out by split decision to eventual winner Johnny Coyle in the semi-final, live on Sky Sports.

But the 20-year-old caught the eye of Matchroom's Eddie Hearn in his first fight and losing effort. Talks between the two could take place this week.

Eggington opened his challenge with a quarter-final clash against Johnny Garton and pummelled his opponent on route to a second round stoppage.

The Sky Sports cameras looked on at York Hall in London as Eggington first put Garton in danger by trapping him in the ropes, before unloading with hooks.

Garton managed to escape but had his head rocked back with a shot on the turn, with the pressure proving too much for the popular Londoner in the second.

He had been cut above the right eye from a clash of heads seconds before the two swapped leather in the centre of the ring, Eggington soon getting the upper hand.

Garton was taking blow after blow without response by the time his corner threw the towel in, as referee Marcus McDonnell circled the two looking to step in anyway.

Eggington found Coyle tougher to land on in the first round of the semi-final with not many telling blows of note, the Stourbridge man taking one flush to the jaw, too.

He settled more into his rhythm come the second session and put in the better work-rate of the two, even if catching Coyle with full blows still proved to be a problem.

A nip and tuck third round saw the contest go to the judges scorecards with McDonald and Steve Gray overruling Michael Alexander, all three scoring the bout 29-28.
