Jodie Stimpson today admitted she must do the 'damage' early to chase down Gwen Jorgensen.

The Oldbury triathlete is set for tomorrow's World Triathlon Series showdown in Hamburg as she looks to reel in the leaders.

She is third in the rankings after missing last month's race in Chicago, behind fellow Brit Helen Jenkins and pacesetter Jorgensen.

The American has won the last three races – making history by claiming her sixth WTS win in the process – and Stimpson admits Jorgensen is the one to beat.

"Gwen is surely the hot athlete at the minute," said Stimpson, who won the opening two races. "If it was to come down to a foot race I would put money on her, so the damage has got to be done before that to try and beat her.

"It's not the easiest when she is also a fantastic swimmer and improving her cycling every session."

Stimpson has spent the last month training after a foot injury she suffered in Yokohama hit her podium challenge in Japan and London. She finished ninth in Yokohama and 11th in London and felt the training was necessary after the setback. She said: "My foot was pretty much healed a few days after London so it was just about getting back into training and getting some good work done which, I'm happy to say, was a good block of consistent work.

"It was definitely needed not only because basically having two weeks off because of the foot but because of all the travelling and racing before that.

"It was good to get my head down and live in my private bubble for a month of very solid work."

Stimpson is in Team England's triathlon squad for the Commonwealth Games this month and will use Hamburg as part of her planning for Glasgow.

She added: "This is an important race on its own but is also in preparation for Glasgow, which is why I have got to miss the relay on Sunday and fly straight back to Morzine."

After Hamburg there are just two races left – in Stockholm and Edmonton – for Stimpson, who finished second in last year's series, to catch Jorgensen.
