Solomon Dacres eyeing New Year title tilt after surgery revelation
Smethwick heavyweight Solomon Dacres is targeting a shot at the British title in the New Year.
Frazer Clarke and Jeamie Tshikeva meet next month for the vacant Lonsdale belt and Dacres wants to face the winner.
The 32-year-old is nearing a return to training after undergoing surgery on a torn bicep sustained in July’s superb points win over Vladyslav Sirenko at Wembley, a result which revived his career.
And the former English champion is eager not to waste any more time once fully fit.
Burton’s Olympic bronze medallist Clarke, a former GB team-mate of Dacres, takes on Tshikeva in Derby on November 29.
Dacres told Sky Sports Boxing Podcast: “The winner of their fight is definitely something I would be eyeing up next.
He continued: “I would like the British. I have been trying to get it for a while. When Fabio Wardley had the British I was trying to get him, before he took Frazer.
“People want to win the British title and I would not say no to (facing) either of them.
“I think the Frazer one would be a bigger fight. I have known him for a long time and we were number one and two and the amateur circuit for many years.
“He blocked my path to the Olympics in many ways. It would be a big fight in the Midlands. But either of them would be good.”
Dacres’ promising career appeared at risk of unravelling when he was beaten inside 90 seconds by David Adeleye last December.
But he rebounded in stunning fashion, accepting a fight with the previously unbeaten Sirenko and then dominating his opponent from the first bell to the last.
It was a performance made even more remarkable when it later emerged Dacres had effectively been fighting with one arm after tearing his left bicep in the second round.
The former Warley ABC star believes he has the ability to one day challenge for world honours and says the recent success of former British champion Wardley serve as inspiration.
Wardley stunned former world champ Joe Parker last weekend and Dacres said: “I just want to get myself up the rankings. I believe I can go all the way.
“If Fabio Wardley can get to where he has got with the background he has got, beating Joe Parker, then who am I not to believe?
“I had an operation after the last fight. I tore the bicep off the tendon, so it has been pinned back in.
“It has been a case of taking it slowly. But I think early next year I should be ready to get back in the ring, maybe February time.
“Certain people might get the luxury to pick and choose but I don’t think I can do that. I think I have to take what I can and prove them wrong or right, depending on how they see me.
“I have to take my chances when I have them.”
