The forgettable West Brom club record who went on to play for Europe's best

West Brom's club record fee back in 2008 was broken when they shelled out £4.7m for Borja Valero.

The highly rated former Real Madrid youngster arrived at Albion from Mallorca, and was the marquee signing of a summer that had just seen Albion scoop the Championship title.

Tony Mowbray and technical director Dan Ashworth were moulding a side ready to survive in the top flight.

But it didn't quite go the way they hoped that summer. Albion's recruitment was not the best, they were ill-equipped at the top end of the field and despite earning plaudits for the way they played that season, they were relegated.

Speaking to the Express & Star in recent years, Ashworth admitted that some of Albion's summer business was not great, and he touched on the fact that Valero did not hit the mark for Albion.

Despite showing his quality and playing most of the games that season for Albion - his spell is one that won't be remembered by many Albion fans.

He was to be a one season player, going out on loan back to Mallorca and then to Villarreal, and in subsequent interviews he has explained how he found life in England tough, and admits he never quite hit his best.

Albion recouped some of their money when he moved to Fiorentina, and he would go on to play well over 150 games there as he made a name for himself in Serie A.

A big move to Inter Milan followed, before he ended up back with Fiorentina. And his career came to an end in the sixth tier of Italian football.

Valero was a player with obvious technical quality. However, unfortunately as most record signings will be remembered for their exploits with Albion, he probably never will be.
