Walsall, who boasted a 12-point lead at the League Two summit after reeling off a club record nine-match winning streak, fell into the play-offs after a midseason collapse.

They momentarily offered hope with a thrilling 4-1 aggregate win over two legs against Chesterfield in the semi-finals.

However, Myles Hippolyte scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for Wimbledon at the national team to condemn Walsall to a seventh successive win in League Two.

"Adversity happens all across the season and it has happened to us," Gordon reflected.
