However, a catastrophic collapse ensued over the following months, and we take a look at the ups and downs of Mat Sadler's second full season in charge.
Success
The season can easily be split in half with regards to the success and failures.
Walsall amassed 58 points from their first 25 games, more than any other team since the rebranding of the division in 2004.
That included a 16-match unbeaten run and a club record nine-match winning streak.
In terms of individuals, Nathan Lowe was the standout, scoring 15 goals and three more in cup competitions, while also weighing in with five assists before his untimely January recall.

Across the whole campaign, Taylor Allen was rightfully recognised for his exploits in the form of Walsall's player of the season award.
The Cannock-born defender netted 11 goals and set-up eight more in 57 appearances in all competitions from the left centre-back position.
