Drama in race for title and play-offs with two to play - non-league round-up and preview

Sporting Khalsa kept their Northern Premier Midlands play-off dreams alive with a dramatic win over rivals Long Eaton United.

Sixth-placed Khalsa prevailed at their Guardian Warehousing Stadium in a thrilling 3-2 victory over the visitors who are one place better off - with the gap sliced to four points with two to play.

Ian Rowe's hosts fought back in spirited style from an early goal down to Long Eaton's Connor Pace as efforts from Chay Tilt and James McGrady handed Khalsa a half-time lead.

A nervy second period reached a crescendo when Simeon Cobourne struck for 3-1 in the 89th minute. Evan Garnett pulled one back in stoppage time but it was not enough.

There are no such hopes for Darlaston Town, whose play-off hopes extinguished a week earlier. Dean Gill's side ran out 2-1 away winners at Grantham Town thanks to Hayden Carson's first-half double.

Lye Town, already relegated from step four, endured more misery with a 2-1 defeat at Hinckley LRFC.

There promises to be a dramatic final couple of fixtures elsewhere in non-league. Saturday's action in Northern Premier West saw play-off chasing Chasetown lose 2-1 at Witton Albion. The Scholars remain fifth and in charge of their top-five destiny. George Cater fired the opener but Witton hit back twice before half-time.

Stafford Rangers, mid-table and safe from relegation, drew 1-1 at Avro thanks to James McQuiklin's late penalty.

Title-chasing Hednesford Town's win over Mossley on Friday set up a dramatic derby day clash away to the Boro on Monday.

Halesowen recorded an important 3-0 away win at mid-table Leiston to keep them four points adrift of top spot with six to play for. Conor Tee netted twice in the second half, a free-kick and a penalty, to add to top scorer Kieren Donnelly's opener.

Drama continues on Monday as National League North leaders Kidderminster Harriers welcome fifth-placed Hereford knowing they are two wins from the title. Phil Brown's men are level on points with second-placed Brackley but boast a far superior goal difference ahead of next weekend's finale. Harriers climbed above Scunthorpe in Friday's dramatic round of fixtures.

Relegated Rushall Olympic visit Oxford City, who just about secured safety.

A full fixture of Bank Holiday non-league action includes a mouth-watering third versus fourth clash in Southern Premier Central as AFC Telford United visit Halesowen Town.

The pair are locked on 72 points with a play-off place secure and could still overhaul Bedford Town's four-point lead.

Stourbridge, in ninth, welcome Bromsgrove Sporting in what is set to be the final match at the War Memorial Ground in the stadium's current guise. Stourbridge confirmed late last month that big changes are required to their home of more than 130 years, including stand and floodlight removal. The club asked for patience for the timely and costly work.

Hednesford Town are gunning for the Northern West title with two games to play and could go top with a win - or even draw - against arch-rivals Stafford today.

The second-placed Pitmen trail leaders Widnes by a single point but a draw or win at Marston Road would be enough to claim top spot in the final week of the season if Widnes drop points in a tricky clash at Vauxhall Motors, who have secured their play-off place.

The campaign comes to a close next Saturday with Hednesford hosting ninth-placed Runcorn and Widnes at home to Trafford, in eighth. Play-off semi-finals take place next Tuesday.

Chasetown welcome already-relegated Hanley Town to The Scholars Ground knowing a victory will confirm the fifth-placed hosts position in the play-offs.

In Northern Midlands Sporting Khalsa go to Darlaston Town knowing a win is needed to keep promotion hopes alive.
