It may be the case more than it has been for some time with West Brom this season.
When you look back on Albion's campaign, there have been so many near misses, points they could and should have bagged and games that arguably should have gone there way.
With Albion now in the chasing pack for the play-off hunt rather than being in the box seat, Jonny Drury looks at six of the biggest missed chances Albion have had this season
Oxford 1-1 West Brom
Albion went to Oxford right at the start of that long run of draws - their first league visit to United for some time.
Karlan Grant lashed them into an early lead, in a game that wasn't littered with clear cut chances for either side.
Albion had more of them, and total control of the game but as the game wore on, Albion invited more and more pressure and somehow only walked away with a point, as they conceded a poor late goal
West Brom 0-0 Cardiff
The drawing run was kicking in by now, but in a number of games Albion were still doing enough to win.
In this one, they did enough in the first half alone to take the spoils.
Darnell Furlong had two chances, John Swift too and other opportunities came and passed Albion by - before they almost conceded a sucker punch as former striker Callum Robinson saw a header hit the woodwork.
Albion had further chances but could not score. It was a game they really should have won.
Preston 1-1 West Brom
It won't be one that is remembered for the right reasons.
Grant put Albion ahead, in a first half that again didn't have a lot of chances but they were the better side.
Albion changed shape and looked to be sitting further back at the start of the second half, invited pressure and conceded.
In the end, both sides had chances to win and it could have gone either way.
At the end of the game, Albion were booed off for arguably the only time under Carlos Corberan's time in charge.
Swansea 1-1 West Brom
By half time, Albion could well have been three or four in front in South Wales.
They missed chance after chance after chance. It felt like it may come back to bite them, but Tom Fellows popped up with a goal.
More chances came, but they couldn't get a second and like they had before and like they did again after, they conceded deep into stoppage time.
Plymouth 2-1 West Brom
A missed chance of the highest order, but not one that can be put at the players door.
A game of few chances, Albion went ahead in the second half through Jayson Molumby.
Two massive officiating blunders in the form of an offside and a penalty went against them and they lost the game.
Later, the refereeing authorities apologised to the club for both decisions and said they were incorrect.
West Brom 0-1 Sunderland
Albion were second favourites going into the game, but dominated Sunderland for large parts and had huge chances.
The biggest came through Molumby but they did have other chances in both halves.
However, a massive goalkeeping error from Joe Wildsmith gifted Sunderland a goal and in the end it led to the three points.
