Darren Moore has propelled Vale to within two points of top spot after collecting four wins from their last five games in League Two.
They produced a statement victory in midweek with a 2-0 success over second-place Bradford City at Vale Park to move level on points with the Bantams.
Vale have been especially strong defensively with only AFC Wimbledon (18) and Colchester United (17) managing more clean sheets than their impressive tally of 16.
