The Halesowen wheelchair tennis star’s Roland Garros singles campaign was shortlived as de Groot advanced to the second one with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 success.

Whiley, 28, shared a tight first set against Dutch star de Groot, who is five years her junior.

But the No.1 seed secured a crucial break to edge ahead.

Whiley, playing in the French Open for the first time in three years having become a mother, dominated the second set 6-0 to draw level.

But the deciding set went the way of eight-times singles Grand Slam winner and reigning French Open champion de Groot, 6-1.

Whiley will be in semi-final action with doubles partner Yui Kamiji – who won the event together in 2014 and 2016 – against Marjolein Buis, of the Netherlands, and France’s Charlotte Famin, with a chance to meet top seeds de Groot and Aniek van Koot in the final.
