Strong winds in Sandringham, Australia, made life difficult for Young, the only Brit in the 110-boat fleet.

Young, 32, who will compete in this year’s Olympics in Japan, sits 40th overall after managing a 21st-place finish in her race.

She said: “It’s not my best start to a regatta. It was tricky conditions but poor starting meant I didn’t make my own luck.”

The event runs until Friday.

“Some elements of the race were OK. It’s useful that we can identify the starting as an error but it’s doubtful that we can solve that in the next 24 hours.”
