Darrell Clarke is targeting two more signings before next month’s transfer deadline as he puts the finishing touches to Walsall’s summer rebuild.

The boss has brought in 15 new players since taking the reins at the Banks’s three months ago, while even more have departed in a summer of sweeping change.

Clarke will step up efforts to sign another striker after tomorrow’s League Two fixture at Plymouth, with the focus very much on bolstering his options in the final third.

The Saddlers have scored only twice in four league matches so far.

“I know what we need, I know what we need for a different option,” said Clarke. “I know what type of player I want, there’s players I want, but getting them in and getting the right one is never easy in football management.

“People think it’s easy but it’s not, there’s a lot of things that come into it and I’m sure people have an understanding of what goes into getting the right player, and not adding just for the sake of it. I’ll be looking to bring in two before the window closes.”

Elijah Adebayo, Caolan Lavery and Josh Gordon are the three strikers currently at the manager’s disposal. Teenager Mitch Candlin is expected to go out on loan.

Clarke continued: “It’s not just about pulling a striker in and then all of a sudden this magic wand’s going to come and we’re going to start winning games three or four-nil.

“We need a striker not because my other strikers are struggling, I need a striker because I’ve only got three strikers – or what I class as first-team strikers – at the club.

“That’s why I need another one coming in, another bit of competition for places.”
